Class overview

ROGUE · PRE-LAUNCH FIELD GUIDE

Playing a Rogue in Forever

Rogues are a damage-focused class built around stealth, control and choosing when a fight begins. This guide deliberately avoids pretending beta numbers are final; it focuses on the parts Blizzard has confirmed and the decisions that are useful before launch.

CLASS IDENTITY

Blizzard describes Rogues as specialists in stealth, poisons, silent projectile weapons and minor mysticism. Expect a playstyle that rewards preparation, positioning and control rather than standing still and trading blows.

ROLE

Rogue is one of Forever's nine launch classes and is presented as a damage-oriented adventurer. It is a natural fit for players who prefer solo control, selective engagements and melee combat with utility.

RACE OPTIONS

Confirmed Rogue choices are Orc, Troll, Undead and Windshaper Skyborne for Horde; Dwarf, Gnome, Human, Night Elf and High Order Skyborne for Alliance. Both Skyborne factions can therefore play Rogue.

SKYBORNE START

Skyborne begin on Zephras Isle, a level 1–12 starting experience. Windshaper Skyborne join the Horde while High Order Skyborne join the Alliance, making Rogue available on both sides of the new race.

RISEN ANCIENTS RECOMMENDATION

Choose Rogue if you enjoy deciding the terms of an encounter. Stealth and control should make exploration and solo questing attractive, while group value will depend on the final launch tuning and encounter design.

Preparing for 1–60

LEVELLING MINDSET

Forever returns to a level 60 journey where the world and exploration matter. For Rogue, prioritise reliable kills, sensible weapon upgrades and using control to reduce unnecessary damage rather than chasing a theoretical launch-day speed route.

LEGACY SYSTEM

The account-wide Legacy System normally becomes available when your first character reaches level 25. A single character can unlock its advantages, so a Rogue main is not forced into levelling alts simply to participate.

ROGUE-SPECIFIC VALUE

Blizzard has confirmed that Legacy profession perks include class-specific tradeskills such as Lockpicking. That makes the broader Legacy progression system directly relevant to Rogue players as well as ordinary crafting professions.

RULESET CHOICE

Forever replaces the traditional realm-first choice with rulesets. Your preferred PvE or PvP environment matters to a stealth class, so decide how much open player conflict you actually want before committing your character's home.

SECOND PASS · CONFIRMED SYSTEMS

Rogue: what Forever changes

Forever keeps the deliberate Classic combat model, but several system changes directly affect Rogues. This section separates confirmed mechanics from the talent and tuning advice that still needs live verification.

COMBAT PACE & ROLE

Rogue remains a melee damage class built around stealth, poisons and controlled engagement. Blizzard says ordinary enemies should take roughly 10–15 seconds to defeat, while dungeon damage dealers still need to manage threat, focus targets and use control rather than treating every pull as an area-damage race.

HIT & CRITICAL STRIKE

Spell, melee and ranged Hit are combined into one Hit stat, and the same is true for Critical Strike. For Rogues this matters beyond weapon attacks: Blizzard specifically notes that the unified stats can improve the reliability of Poison effects.

WEAPON SKILL

Weapon skill still functions, but items provide less weapon skill than before. The intention is to stop weapon-skill items from automatically dominating gearing decisions, leaving more room for competing stats and equipment choices.

TALENT STRUCTURE

Forever retains Classic-shaped talent trees with the same number of rows. One-point milestone talents remain at 11, 21 and 31 points, with an additional milestone at 16 points. Some 1.12 talents remain unchanged while others are revised or improved.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR OUR BUILD GUIDES

We can map the confirmed tree structure now, but we will not declare a levelling, PvE or PvP build “best” until the Rogue talent values and live tuning have been tested. The site will eventually carry separate recommended builds rather than forcing one tree to pretend it solves every activity.

Race choice for a Rogue

Rogue has unusually broad race access in Forever. The right choice can therefore be based on faction, starting experience and racial utility instead of following an unsupported pre-launch damage ranking.

HORDEOrc · Troll · Undead · Windshaper SkyborneALLIANCEDwarf · Gnome · Human · Night Elf · High Order Skyborne

SKYBORNE ROGUE

Both Skyborne factions can become Rogues. Their unique journey begins on Zephras Isle and covers levels 1–12, so this is a genuinely different opening route rather than merely a cosmetic race choice.

RACIAL PHILOSOPHY

Forever reworks racial abilities around two active and two passive abilities per race, aiming for comparable offensive contribution while preserving different utility. That makes race recommendations more situational than a single universal ranking.

Legacy progression for Rogue mains

WHEN IT UNLOCKS

The Legacy System unlocks when you earn your first Legacy Point. For most players this happens at level 25, but reaching 150 in a non-gathering primary tradeskill or exploring the entire world map can also unlock it.

ROGUE-SPECIFIC VALUE

Working Overtime explicitly applies to class-specific tradeskills such as Lockpicking. Adventure perks also include High Alert for improved stealth detection outside battlegrounds and Talented, which can unlock talent points up to five levels earlier than normal.

ALTS ARE OPTIONAL

Legacy is account-wide and encourages varied characters, but Blizzard confirms that all character advantages can be unlocked on a single character. A Rogue main does not need to become an a large roster of alts simply to remain competitive.

WHY PROFESSIONS MATTER

Tradeskills contribute Legacy Points and interact with several Legacy perks. That gives professions a progression purpose beyond their immediate crafted items, so our later Rogue levelling guide will treat profession planning as part of the journey rather than an appendix.

Legacy priorities for your Rogue.

For a fresh Rogue, Adventure perks such as Well Rested, Talented and Frequent Flier are our starting priorities. Working Overtime is also relevant because Blizzard confirms it can affect class-specific skills such as Lockpicking. At level 60, Resourcefulness perks become more attractive depending on your PvE or PvP focus.

Skyborne Rogue in WoW Forever

Rogue is available to both Skyborne factions. A Windshaper Skyborne Rogue joins the Horde, while a High Order Skyborne Rogue joins the Alliance. Unlike Shaman and Mage, Rogue is not locked to one side of the Skyborne split.

The two paths do not share identical racials. Blizzard has confirmed the Windshaper package includes Walk on Air, a 10-second glide; Skysight, an Elemental Blessing that increases run speed by 10%; Wind Blessed, a passive Haste bonus increased to 3% in the 15 October beta update (previously 1%); and Elemental Insight, increasing damage to Elementals by 5%.

These are beta values, not proof of a best-in-slot Rogue race; the final launch version and encounter context still matter. Final Rogue builds, encounter mix, PvP value and racial tuning all matter. We will make that comparison once live evidence exists rather than converting 1% Haste into a unverified pre-launch conclusion.

Skyborne begin on Zephras Isle from levels 1-12. See the full Skyborne guide for faction and racial details, or the Races & Factions guide for every confirmed Rogue race option.

ACCURACY POLICY

No invented best-in-slot lists.

Confirmed information can be documented before launch. Tuning-dependent rankings and recommendations will be labelled until they can be checked against the live game.

Forever changes

Skyborne Rogues are available to both Horde Windshapers and Alliance High Order characters.

Forever keeps strong class identity while updating abilities, talents and gearing. Exact talent rankings, rotations and BiS recommendations remain beta-sensitive and will be dated when added.

ROGUE · PRE-LAUNCH DEEP DIVE

How to plan your Rogue before launch

Forever is changing talents, abilities and itemisation while preserving class identity. This section separates confirmed systems from tuning-sensitive recommendations so the guide stays useful without pretending beta numbers are carved into stone.

Core playstyle

Rogue remains a melee damage class built around stealth, control, poisons and careful target selection. Forever's class updates are intended to add meaningful talent and ability choices without flattening class identity.

Skyborne Rogue

Both Windshaper and High Order Skyborne can be Rogues. Their journey begins on Zephras Isle from levels 1–12, giving Rogue players a completely new opening route before joining the wider 1–60 world.

Gearing changes

Forever combines melee, ranged and spell hit into a unified hit stat, and does the same for critical chance. Blizzard specifically notes that Rogues can benefit from hit improving the reliability of tools such as Poisons.

Weapon choices

Weapon skill remains, but items that grant weapon skill provide less per item than before. That should create more genuine gearing decisions instead of making weapon-skill items automatic choices. Exact Rogue weapon rankings remain unconfirmed.

Legacy progression

The account-wide Legacy System can begin once you earn your first Legacy Point. For most players that will be at level 25, although profession progression or world exploration can unlock it too. The Talented perk can eventually unlock talent points up to five levels earlier than normal.

Beta status

The Forever beta runs through 21 October 2026. Talent rankings, rotations, stat weights and BiS lists will stay marked as pending until testing and launch data make those recommendations defensible.

Latest racial source (15 October beta): Blizzard increased Wind Blessed to 3% Haste, let Skysight and Read Leyline be used while moving, and reduced Walk on Air to a 90-second cooldown. See Blizzard's official Forever beta development notes. These values must be checked again for the live game.

02 / PROGRESSION

Levelling 1–60

Rogue levelling: a practical 1–60 plan

Pre-launch preparation, reviewed 22 October 2026. This is a decision-making route using confirmed class mechanics, not a tested fastest-level guide.

Levels 1–12: control the pull

  • Learn how to approach targets from Stealth and separate enemies using Sap and Distract when available. Sap no longer breaks Stealth, so it can help prepare a difficult pull without committing to combat.
  • Upgrade main-hand and off-hand weapons regularly. Keep poisons stocked once trained; Blizzard has increased charges and allows them alongside temporary weapon enhancements.
  • Choose your starting faction deliberately. Skyborne Rogues on either faction start in the level 1–12 Zephras Isle experience.

Levels 13–24: choose a weapon plan

Compare your available weapons before committing to a specific tree. Assassination's Mutilate requires two daggers, whereas Combat and Subtlety support more weapon choices. Use crowd control and positioning to reduce downtime rather than assuming that every mob should be fought head-on.

Level 25 onwards: connect to Legacy

The first Legacy Point commonly unlocks Legacy progression around level 25, but professions or world exploration provide other routes. Working Overtime can support Lockpicking; consider it if you are actively using the skill. Do not spend points based on a generic levelling tier list without checking available bonuses.

Level 40 and level 60

Dual Specialization becomes available at level 40, making it easier to retain a questing approach alongside a different group or PvP setup. At 60, review your actual weapons, talent choices and encounter demands before investing in a specific damage plan.

Official source: Blizzard's Rogue class deep dive. Specific levelling speed, talent point-by-point order and consumable efficiency require live testing.

03 / SPECIALISATION

Talents & builds

Rogue talents: what each tree enables in Forever

Last checked 22 October 2026. Beta design, not a final numerical ranking. Talents begin at level 10. Milestone talents are available after spending 11, 16, 21 and 31 points in a tree; respeccing requires a class trainer. Dual Specialization becomes available at level 40.

Assassination: daggers, poisons and maintained finishers

  • Cold Blood (16-point milestone): moved earlier and now works with Mutilate.
  • Mutilate (21-point milestone): costs 60 Energy, requires a dagger in both hands, awards two Combo Points and gains damage against poisoned targets. Check equipment before planning around it.
  • Venom (31-point milestone): a 25-Energy finishing move that improves poison damage and application chance. Blizzard describes maintaining Venom and Slice and Dice as central to the intended Assassination playstyle.

Combat: direct weapon damage and finishing-move efficiency

  • Flawless Execution (16-point milestone): reduces Eviscerate's Energy cost by 10.
  • Hack and Slash: consolidates weapon specialisations, now including axes. The benefit changes with equipped weapon type.
  • Precision: improves hit chance with attacks and spells, including poisons; Blade Flurry remains part of the direct-damage/cleave identity.

Subtlety: control, bleeds and opportunity-based attacks

  • Premeditation (16-point milestone): now available earlier and lasts 20 seconds.
  • Hemorrhage: supports Rupture damage; Cutthroat can enable Ambush outside Stealth after Backstab.
  • Thousand Cuts (31-point milestone): Rupture ticks reduce the Energy cost of the next Hemorrhage or Backstab, stacking over time.

Before you copy a build: check the exact in-game tree, point requirements, weapons, beta revisions and encounter type. No single allocation has been verified as superior for levelling, PvE and PvP.

04 / GROUP CONTENT

PvE guidance

Rogue PvE: group role and an actionable opener

Confirmed tools: stealth access, Sap, Distract, poisons, Expose Armor, threat reduction from Feint and weapon-dependent damage choices.

Before a dungeon pull

  1. Ask which enemy your tank or group wants controlled. Use Stealth and Distract to position, then Sap an appropriate enemy before the fight begins. Sap no longer removes Stealth.
  2. Agree on armour debuffs. Expose Armor can now coexist with Warrior Sunder Armor; stronger and weaker effects still interact, so coordinate with the Warrior rather than overwriting blindly.
  3. Apply the poison and weapon enhancement appropriate to the task. Poisons can now coexist with weightstones or sharpening stones.

During combat

Manage threat if attacking a target the tank has only just engaged; Blizzard doubled Feint's threat-reduction effect. For Assassination with Venom, its developer-described maintenance priority is Venom and Slice and Dice before optional damage finishers. For Combat or Subtlety, the chosen abilities and weapon type change which finishing moves are relevant.

Not yet verified: optimal opener timings, exact Combo Point thresholds, stat weights, boss-specific rotations, DPS rankings and encounter-specific BiS. These must be checked after live launch.

05 / COMPETITIVE PLAY

PvP guidance

Rogue PvP: control without pretending balance is final

Rogue's confirmed identity makes target selection, positioning and crowd control important. This is a tactical framework, not a claim that one spec wins every matchup.

  • Stealth / Sap: set up control before committing. The beta fixes include Sap flagging the Rogue for PvP when used on a PvP-flagged target; plan around that interaction in open-world encounters.
  • Distract: reduces affected enemies' Stealth detection, but warns opposing players that a Rogue may be nearby. It is not an invisible, risk-free setup.
  • Survival and escapes: prepare your control and defensive abilities before engaging a second enemy. Avoid planning a build entirely around an untested burst-damage screenshot.
  • Ruleset: choose your desired PvP environment before launch. Compare battleground rewards and rank requirements separately from class duelling advice.

Final PvP talent trees, counters, burst windows and gear rankings require the live game. Follow the Forever PvP guide for rules and ranks, and the official beta notes for Rogue fixes.

06 / EQUIPMENT

Gear & items

Rogue gear priorities before launch

  • Weapons first: match your weapon plan to the talents you actually intend to use. Two daggers are mandatory for Assassination's Mutilate; other trees allow a broader selection, including one-handed axes.
  • Reliability: review Hit and Precision because Forever combines melee, ranged and spell Hit, with poison applications also benefiting from relevant changes.
  • Consumables: track poison charges and compatible temporary weapon improvements. They are complementary in Forever, not mutually exclusive.
  • Group utility: evaluate upgrades for encounters and control responsibilities, not simply raw item level.

No verified BiS list yet. Blizzard has not supplied enough stable, discoverable final-release item data to substantiate an ordered best-in-slot list or precise stat weights. Item-specific rankings will be based on release-phase testing and documented drop sources.

Primary source: Rogue class changes.

Professions & systems

Professions & Reference

Profession advice will weigh levelling utility, crafted upgrades, consumables and Forever's expanded profession/Camping systems. Recommendations will be tested rather than inherited from another WoW ruleset.
