A first-hour Factorio 2.1 checklist with milestones and recovery advice rather than unrealistic speedrun deadlines.

Your first hour should establish a factory that can keep working while you plan the next step. The time ranges below are flexible milestones, not a speedrun target: map generation, enemy settings and player familiarity can change the pace considerably.
Identify nearby iron, copper, coal, stone and water. Mine enough stone and iron to set up a few furnaces, then feed them ore and fuel. Keep a small stock of iron plates for mining drills, furnaces, belts and power equipment. Avoid spending the entire opening building a decorative permanent base.
Place drills so ore reaches furnaces with minimal manual carrying. Keep coal available for burner equipment. Watch each output: a furnace full of plates is blocked, while a furnace waiting for ore has an upstream supply problem. This distinction becomes the basis of all later factory troubleshooting.
Connect offshore water intake, a boiler supplied with fuel and steam engines. Run power poles to electric miners and the first assembling machines. Inspect the electrical network when connecting a new production line; low power can slow multiple systems simultaneously and disguise the real problem.
Set up basic iron and copper plate delivery, then automate gears, belts and inserters. Begin electronic circuits when supply permits. Keep input and output paths readable, and leave space to duplicate a successful line. Do not require yourself to reach a particular belt colour or machine count within the hour.
Start a continuous early science-pack line and connect it to laboratories. If a recipe stalls, inspect ingredients one stage backwards instead of adding more labs. The aim is to finish with dependable research and a clear list of shortages.
If power fails, check fuel and water before adding more steam engines. If science stops, trace the missing ingredient back through assembly, smelting and mining. If your layout feels cramped, extend the line outward instead of demolishing every starter machine.
These base-game early systems remain the foundation in 2.1 stable. Space Age adds substantial later progression but does not require new players to rush into space during the first session. Older blueprints involving fluids or circuits may need review because 2.1 changed those systems.
