Factorio Beginner Guide

A practical Factorio 2.1 beginner route from hand-mining to reliable power, automated plates and science.

Factorio is a game about making the next task happen automatically. Start with a small working factory, then improve the part that is holding it back. The advice below applies to the base game in 2.1 stable; Space Age expands progression later, but does not replace these fundamentals.

1. Establish the basic resource loop

Locate iron, copper, coal, stone and water. Use your starting equipment to mine enough iron and stone for furnaces, then smelt plates. Iron supports most early machines, copper becomes essential for electrical components, and coal keeps early burners and boilers supplied.

2. Move from manual work to powered production

Burner drills and stone furnaces are useful starters, not a permanent plan. Build a boiler and steam engines beside water, supply the boiler with fuel, and connect electric mining drills and assemblers through power poles. Check the electricity production and consumption display before expanding.

3. Automate the parts you repeatedly craft

Start with iron plates, copper plates, gears, belts, inserters and electronic circuits. Use belts to deliver materials to assembling machines and inserters to move items between belts, machines and chests. A modest line that never stops is more valuable than a large layout that regularly runs dry.

4. Turn the factory into research

Automate the first science packs and feed them to laboratories. Use research to unlock the next useful capability rather than trying to hand-craft everything first. Keep science production separate enough that you can see which ingredient is missing.

5. Expand one bottleneck at a time

If assemblers are idle, inspect their input belts; if belts are empty, check miners and furnaces; if everything slows together, inspect power. Add machines to the limiting stage, then watch whether the constraint moves elsewhere. Leave room beside the smelting and science areas for future parallel lines.

6. Protect production without overbuilding

In enemy-enabled maps, pollution and nearby nests influence attacks. Keep ammunition and defensive coverage available as production grows. Factorio 2.1 changed enemy expansion behaviour, so older advice based on exploiting early map exploration should not be treated as current strategy.

Beginner mistakes to avoid

2.1 compatibility note

Version 2.1 is primarily a quality-of-life and refinement update, not a replacement for early mining, smelting, electricity or science. Later circuit-network and fluid-system changes can affect existing designs, so check old blueprints before importing them.
