Factorio Choosing a Starting Area Guide

Evaluate Factorio 2.1 starting locations using resource access, power, logistics room and defensible expansion routes.

A good starting area is not simply the richest ore patch. It is a location where you can reach essential materials, generate electricity, move products between production lines and expand without rebuilding everything. Use this checklist for the base game in Factorio 2.1 stable.

Check the five essentials

Find iron ore, copper ore, coal, stone and water within a practical distance. Iron and copper become the backbone of smelting and assembly; coal supports early fuel and power; stone supplies furnaces and construction; water is needed for steam generation. A scenic start with one missing essential can mean a lot of unnecessary hauling.

Look for space between ore and production

Plan a rough route from miners to furnaces, from furnaces to assembly, and from assembly to research. Leave room to extend each section and to route belts without crossing every other production line. Do not place the permanent factory directly over the only easy path between resources.

Consider water and power access

A water source close to coal and the first production area reduces the early logistics burden of steam power. Check that the shoreline gives you enough room for the required power buildings and future extensions.

Assess defence and terrain

In enemy-enabled games, forests, lakes, cliffs and narrow approaches can influence where walls and turrets are useful. Defensive terrain is helpful, but do not choose a location with such restricted building space that the factory cannot grow. Check pollution exposure as production expands.

Factorio 2.1 enemy expansion caution

Wube changed biter expansion behaviour in 2.1, including how expansion groups scale and choose locations. Older advice that early exploration suppresses nearby expansions is outdated. Judge safety by current nests, terrain and defensive capacity rather than relying on that former behaviour.

When to move or rebuild

Do not restart simply because the first base looks untidy. Keep it producing while you create a better-organised second area or expand into nearby ore. A functioning starter base can supply the materials needed for the rebuild. Only relocate early if the map creates a genuine long-term supply or access problem.
