Overview

Every Outworld Station production chain ultimately depends on resource supply. When extraction is weak, expanding downstream factories only makes the shortage harder to diagnose.

Start with demand

Work backwards from the item you want to produce. List each intermediate and raw resource, then identify materials already consumed elsewhere.

Separate extraction from processing

Use a buffer where practical. If it empties, extraction or delivery is weak. If it fills while factories wait, the problem is farther downstream.

Miner connections

Current stable versions allow Miners to link to any factory building. Direct connections are useful for dedicated chains, while shared resources benefit from controlled distribution.

Scale sustained supply, not stockpiles

A full storage container can make an undersized mine look healthy for a while. Judge supply after the chain has operated long enough to consume its starting reserve.

Protect shared resources

When several chains consume the same raw material, calculate combined demand and preserve enough capacity for important progression components.

Advanced extraction

Later progression introduces systems including Cloud Miners, Exo-Planet Lifters and Quantum Extractors. Quantum Extractors become unlockable at Station Level 11, while Level 12 opens major Exo-Planet infrastructure around Helion.

Remote-resource logistics

Do not scale remote extraction without planning how its output reaches consumers. Build receiving buffers and transport capacity before increasing supply.

Use Production Overview

As the station grows, compare production across the location rather than relying on one container or machine to represent the entire resource chain.

When to expand extraction

Increase supply when sustained consumption drains buffers or when planned expansion will exceed existing capacity. Avoid mining huge surpluses merely because another extractor fits.

Choose extraction by actual consumer demand

Identify the finished item you want, find its first raw input and calculate the combined requirements of every consumer sharing that resource. Increase mining only when the existing extraction rate cannot meet that demand. A full ore buffer alongside an empty factory input usually signals a transfer issue, not a need for more mining.

A Version 1.2 mining check

The 1.2 update corrects how the Bio-Extractor accounts for Miner Output upgrades, while 1.2.0.2 applies miner technology on load. After changing the tech level or opening an older save, check observed output and downstream supply. Do not assume an old production-rate spreadsheet still represents your installed build.

Separate extraction from dispatch

A mine may extract material successfully but fail to send it quickly enough to processing. Inspect the destination's filters and buffer, then the source's sending behaviour and the link. Measure delivery, not only stored quantity, when deciding whether another mining module is worth building.

Updated for Outworld Station 1.2.0.2. Feature changes verified against the official developer patch notes; check live recipe values in the game's Codex.

Practical calculation workshop: Mine output versus send capacity

Worked example, not an official game recipe: Two miners each extract an illustrative 48 ore/min, while the receiving refinery needs 135 ore/min. Each mine can dispatch only 36 ore/min through its configured connections, so the apparent extraction total is not the same as delivered ore.

Inputs to record in your own save

135 ore/min target; extraction 48/min per miner. Copy the relevant measured rate, recipe ratio, storage limit and transport capacity from the in-game Codex, Calculator or Production Overview before using these figures for a real build.

Step-by-step calculations

  1. Miners at the observed extraction rate: ceil(135 ÷ 48) = 3 miners.
  2. Miners if effective sending is 36/min each: ceil(135 ÷ 36) = 4 miners.

How to interpret the result: Always size the real route, not the mine tooltip. A total extraction of 144/min from three mines is still insufficient if their combined send capacity is only 108/min.

Putting the numbers into practice

Compare raw extraction, module storage, outgoing delivery and refinery receipts in one observation window. Increase sending efficiency or provide another route before buying a fourth mine.

Sanity check before spending materials

A full mine output with an empty refinery is transport-constrained. A mine that stays empty while the refinery waits is more likely extraction-constrained.

Important distinction: the formula is reusable, but these example quantities are illustrative, not verified Outworld Station building statistics. Recalculate using the values displayed by your exact technology tier and active recipe. Round required machine counts up to whole modules; when a route is slower than production, use the route's measured delivery rate in capacity calculations.
