Class overview
Normal
The baseline cooperative experience. PvP combat is optional rather than an ever-present world threat.
PvP
Open-world conflict matters. On the PvP ruleset, your characters are locked to one faction.
Roleplaying & Hardcore
Roleplaying supports an RP-focused community. Hardcore arrives after launch and uses a separate ecosystem.
How Forever rulesets work
Forever moves away from making players choose from a long traditional realm list. Instead, you first select a broad ruleset ecosystem built around the kind of experience you want. Blizzard's goal is to reduce the old problem of choosing a realm before you have any useful idea which population will still be healthy months later.
Normal: the baseline experience, centred on questing, exploration and cooperation, with player-versus-player combat engaged by choice. PvP: the more conflict-focused ruleset for players who want open-world faction danger as part of the levelling experience. Roleplaying: provides a community space intended for players who want character-driven and social roleplay alongside normal adventuring.
Hardcore is not available at launch. Blizzard plans to add it later with special Legacy rules. Non-Hardcore Legacy Challenge completion will not automatically carry into Hardcore, while challenges earned in Hardcore can grant the equivalent completion in other rulesets. Hardcore will also receive its own challenges because PvP Legacy Challenges cannot be completed there.

RETURN TO WOW FOREVER GUIDES →Practical ruleset choices before creating a character
Verified 22 October 2026 against Blizzard's ruleset announcement. Pick where your friends will play before investing in a character. Forever's rulesets are separate spaces for ordinary dungeons and raids; being on the same faction does not let you group across different rulesets.
Which ruleset should you choose?
- Normal: best suited to questing, exploration and cooperative PvE when you want to decide when to participate in open-world PvP.
- PvP: choose if contested-zone encounters and faction conflict are part of the experience you want. You can create characters for only one faction on this ruleset. Faction population balancing may temporarily restrict new character creation.
- Roleplaying: choose when character-driven communities and social roleplay matter to your enjoyment. It does not remove ordinary questing and adventuring.
- Hardcore: not available on 4 November. Its later launch will use separate character and Legacy rules. Do not reserve a launch-day Hardcore character expecting it to be playable immediately.
Can you switch rulesets later?
You cannot freely move a living character between rulesets. To play with friends in another ordinary ruleset, create a new character there. When Hardcore arrives, a dead Hardcore character may transfer out to another ruleset, including PvP, but the reverse Legacy completion rules are deliberately different. Hardcore-earned Challenges can count outside Hardcore; non-Hardcore Challenges do not count back into Hardcore.
How cross-ruleset activities work
Characters from different rulesets can encounter one another in Battlegrounds where matchmaking allows, except Hardcore. Ordinary dungeon and raid groups remain restricted to the same ruleset, and Horde and Alliance characters cannot form mixed-faction groups. Confirm your group’s faction and ruleset, not merely whether everyone has an active subscription.
Language and social settings
Preferred Online Language is an account-wide setting in Game Menu → Options → Languages and Social. Blizzard says it has a 24-hour cooldown after changes. Set it before recruiting a long-term group rather than treating it as a per-character option.
