PREPARATION
VALHEIM 1.0 · BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME
Build a repeatable preparation routine for boss fights, expeditions and new biomes so a bad encounter costs time rather than an entire evening.
THE PREPARATION ROUTINE
Valheim rewards preparation more than reckless damage output. Food determines your available health and stamina, equipment determines how safely you can take or avoid damage, and a planned recovery route can turn a death from a disaster into a short interruption.
FOOD
Keep all food slots active and use foods appropriate to your current biome and build. Your total health and stamina depend heavily on food, so do not begin a major expedition with timers nearly expired.
EQUIPMENT
Repair weapons, armour, shields and tools before leaving. Carry the damage types your target is vulnerable to where practical rather than relying on one favourite weapon for every encounter.
RESISTANCE & RECOVERY
Carry biome-appropriate resistance, healing and stamina or Eitr recovery supplies. Cold, poison and fire become major preparation checks at different stages of progression.
PLAN FOR THE FIGHT GOING WRONG
The useful question is not only 'can I win?' but 'what happens if I die?' A small amount of planning makes corpse recovery dramatically less painful.
REST FIRST
Leave with the Rested effect whenever possible. Preserve stamina during travel so you arrive at the encounter ready rather than exhausted.
BUILD A ROUTE HOME
React to the animation before committing to another attack. Blocking or dodging cleanly is worth more than squeezing in one extra hit.
USE RANGE
A bow can make the encounter forgiving, particularly while learning the boss. Keep enough distance to react without spending the entire fight running away.
DON'T GET GREEDY
Where the game allows it, clear nearby enemies and obvious hazards before summoning a boss. Do not begin a major encounter while already managing unrelated threats.
REWARDS & PROGRESSION
Before leaving: eat, repair, rest, refill ammunition and consumables, confirm resistance supplies, check portal or transport arrangements and leave replacement gear somewhere safe. In co-op, make sure everyone has completed the same basics rather than relying on one prepared Viking to rescue the rest.
