Octavian the Militia Captain V Rising boss guide artwork

Octavian the Militia Captain is part of the Risen Ancients V Rising 1.1 boss-guide progression. This guide covers where to find the encounter, the attacks that matter, a practical Normal strategy, Brutal Mode considerations and the progression rewards.

Location and preparation

Verified 1.1 level: 58

Finding Bastion of Dunley

The Bastion of Dunley is located in northern Dunley Farmlands.

Octavian occupies the fortified central area.

The surrounding militia can interfere with the encounter if left alive, particularly ranged units capable of attacking from outside your immediate view.

Attacks and abilities

Key attacks

Slash Combo: Octavian chains several sword swings at close range. Wait for the sequence to finish before committing to melee.

Longbow summon: he can call a Militia Longbowman into the arena. Remove the add before its ranged pressure overlaps with Octavian's attacks.

Spinning attack: Octavian becomes a moving whirlwind that repeatedly knocks back and damages targets. Create distance and keep moving until the spin ends.

Ranged blade pressure: sword projectiles punish players who simply retreat in a straight line.

How to beat Octavian the Militia Captain

Keep the centre of the arena available so the spinning attack cannot trap you against a wall. Clear summoned ranged militia promptly and use ranged damage while Octavian is unsafe to approach.

Brutal Mode strategy

Brutal difficulty

Reliable current sources establish the same core sword, summon and spinning mechanics, but I have not found sufficiently strong evidence for an additional 1.1 Brutal-only move. The guide therefore does not invent one. Use shorter punish windows, keep an escape route for the spin and eliminate ranged adds immediately.

Rewards and unlocks

Rewards and progression

Octavian has historically been associated with significant equipment progression.

However, the 1.1 update redistributed several boss unlocks, and we should confirm his current reward allocation before publishing an exact recipe list.

Practical Bastion walkthrough

Preparation and arena control

Clear the surrounding militia before engaging Octavian, especially ranged enemies who could fire into the boss area. Repair equipment and bring a ranged attack for moments when his sword combinations make melee unsafe. Keep access to the centre of the arena.

Slash combination

Wait until Octavian finishes his close-range sword sequence before stepping in to retaliate. Do not trade attacks while his follow-up swings are still active; a short safe punish window is more reliable.

Summoned Longbowman

Deal with the summoned ranged militia promptly. Ignoring the add means you may have to dodge an arrow while also responding to Octavian's next attack. Use a quick ranged or area attack if reaching the add would expose you to the boss.

Whirlwind and sword projectiles

When Octavian starts spinning, create space and keep moving until the sequence finishes. Avoid being pushed against the arena edge. Move sideways against ranged blade pressure instead of retreating in a straight line.

Solo and co-op adjustments

Solo players should remove the Longbowman before resuming sustained boss damage. In co-op, one player can focus on the add while the others maintain safe spacing; avoid clustering where the whirlwind could hit several players.

Rewards

The precise current 1.1 equipment unlocks are not confirmed in the existing guide record. Check the in-game V Blood reward panel rather than relying on older recipe lists.
