The Duke of Balaton V Rising boss guide artwork

The Duke of Balaton is part of the Risen Ancients V Rising 1.1 boss-guide progression. This guide covers where to find the encounter, the attacks that matter, a practical Normal strategy, Brutal Mode considerations and the progression rewards.

Location and preparation

Verified 1.1 level: 64

Finding the Swamp of Greed

The Duke occupies the Swamp of Greed in the Cursed Forest.

Use the V Blood tracking interface to locate his position.

The surrounding region contains dangerous wildlife and other hostile creatures. Prepare your route before travelling into the forest.

Recommended preparation

The Shroud of the Forest is useful for managing the Cursed Forest's navigation effects.

Ensure your equipment is repaired and your blood quality is suitable before approaching the swamp.

Attacks and abilities

Key attacks

Leap: the Duke jumps toward the player's position and threatens the landing area. Move after reading the leap rather than spending your travel skill prematurely.

Tongue attack: his long tongue threatens players at range and rewards lateral movement.

Frog summons: smaller amphibians steadily add battlefield pressure if they are allowed to accumulate.

Frog transformation: the Duke can temporarily transform the player, replacing normal combat options with a survival-focused movement phase.

How to beat The Duke of Balaton

Maintain medium range, clear smaller frogs with area damage and preserve movement for the Duke's leap or tongue. If transformed, stop trying to maintain an offensive rotation and concentrate entirely on avoiding danger until normal control returns.

Brutal Mode strategy

Brutal difficulty

Current 1.1 sources reliably establish the Duke's leap, tongue, adds and transformation mechanics but do not support a distinct additional Brutal-only attack strongly enough to state one as fact. On Brutal, remove frog adds promptly and avoid spending movement unnecessarily before a leap or transformation sequence.

Rewards and unlocks

Rewards and progression

Defeating the Duke unlocks Toad Form, adding another traversal transformation to the vampire's exploration toolkit.

Practical preparation checklist

Fight plan and attack responses

Opening: fight at medium range

Stay far enough away to read the Duke's leap and tongue without retreating into the edge of the arena. Move laterally when the tongue threatens your current line, and only attack once the immediate danger has passed.

Frog summons: prevent crowding

Use area attacks to remove smaller frogs before they block your movement. Avoid tunnelling on the Duke's health bar while the number of adds grows; clearing the space makes the next leap much easier to avoid.

Leap: respond to the landing

Watch the jump and leave the threatened landing area. Do not automatically spend your movement skill as soon as the Duke takes off; keeping it available gives you an answer if the next attack catches you out of position.

Frog transformation: switch to survival

When transformed, your usual attack plan is interrupted. Concentrate on staying clear of the Duke and other enemies until your normal abilities return. Resume damage only after you have recovered a safe position.

Solo and co-op advice

Solo: Clear adds frequently and prioritise survival during transformation. Short damage windows are safer than trying to finish the encounter while the arena is crowded.

Co-op: Share responsibility for clearing smaller frogs and avoid standing together in the Duke's leap path. If one player is transformed, the others can focus on maintaining space rather than forcing a risky damage race.

Using the reward

Toad Form is a traversal tool rather than a direct combat upgrade. After unlocking it, review where the transformation can help you explore before continuing to the next numbered boss.
