Bane the Shadowblade V Rising boss guide artwork

Bane the Shadowblade is part of the Risen Ancients V Rising 1.1 boss-guide progression. This guide covers where to find the encounter, the attacks that matter, a practical Normal strategy, Brutal Mode considerations and the progression rewards.

Location and preparation

Verified 1.1 level: 50

Choosing the battlefield

Ideally, reveal Bane on a broad stretch of road with enough space to avoid his knife throws and teleport attacks.

Avoid narrow bridges and heavily populated villages.

Be especially careful around other roaming V Blood bosses. Accidentally involving Vincent or Jade can turn a manageable encounter into a spectacularly unnecessary disaster.

Attacks and abilities

Complete attack breakdown

Triple Slash

Bane performs three consecutive melee attacks. The final strike is a lunging attack that can incapacitate you.

Counter: Move outside his melee range and wait for the complete sequence before counterattacking.

Triple Knife Throw

Bane dashes away and throws three knives towards the player.

Counter: Move sideways and avoid pursuing him directly along his throwing line.

Dark Spin

Bane prepares a purple area attack centred on himself.

Counter: Leave melee range as soon as the animation begins.

Teleport Strike

Bane disappears and reappears near the player to deliver an incapacitating strike.

Counter: Preserve Veil or a defensive spell for his reappearance.

Into the Shadows

Bane disappears among several cloaked figures.

Attacking an incorrect figure can summon additional undead enemies.

Counter: Avoid blindly attacking every figure. Watch their behaviour and identify Bane before committing damage.

Shadow Clone

Below approximately half health, Bane's knife-throw dash can leave a shadow that also throws knives.

Counter: Watch both Bane and the lingering clone before choosing your escape direction.

Brutal: Chained Knife Throws

Bane can repeat his knife-throw attack several times in succession.

Counter: Continue moving until the entire sequence ends rather than counterattacking after the first volley.

How to beat Bane the Shadowblade

Normal difficulty walkthrough

Opening: Reveal him on your terms

Follow Bane until he reaches a suitable stretch of road.

Check for nearby militia and other roaming bosses before attacking.

Begin with a ranged spell to reveal his disguise, then move into a position with sufficient space to dodge.

Don't immediately spend all your abilities during his transformation. His next attack may require a defensive response.

Triple Slash: Wait for the third hit

Bane's melee combination consists of three strikes.

The third is particularly dangerous because it lunges forward and can incapacitate you.

Move away from the initial attacks, then re-engage after the third strike finishes.

A Greatsword can provide a useful counterattack during this recovery window.

Knife Throw: Avoid chasing directly

When Bane dashes away, prepare for three incoming knives.

Move sideways rather than running directly towards him.

Once the knives pass, resume your ranged attacks.

Dark Spin: Leave melee range

Bane's purple spinning attack punishes players who remain too close.

Stop attacking when he begins the animation and move outside its radius.

Use Chaos Volley once the attack has ended.

Teleport Strike: Preserve your escape

When Bane disappears, avoid standing still.

Prepare Blood Rite or Veil for his reappearance.

If you're incapacitated, prioritise recovering your position rather than immediately attempting another attack.

Into the Shadows: Identify the real Bane

This is his signature mechanic.

Bane disappears among multiple cloaked figures. Attacking the wrong figure can create additional undead enemies, making the encounter increasingly difficult.

The safest approach is to avoid indiscriminate area attacks during this phase.

Observe the figures and attack deliberately.

If you trigger additional undead, eliminate the most threatening enemies before returning your attention to Bane.

Second phase: Shadow Clone

Below approximately half health, Bane's knife attack becomes more dangerous because his dash leaves a shadow clone.

The clone can also throw knives.

Watch both attack directions and avoid standing between Bane and his duplicate.

Finishing the encounter

Maintain controlled damage, preserve a defensive ability for Teleport Strike and avoid unnecessary undead summons.

The encounter is considerably easier when you resist the temptation to attack everything that moves during Into the Shadows.

Brutal Mode strategy

Brutal difficulty strategy

Additional chained knife attacks

Brutal difficulty allows Bane to repeat his knife-throw sequence several times.

This makes chasing him particularly dangerous.

Mechanic | Normal | Brutal

Triple Slash | Yes | Yes

Teleport Strike | Yes | Yes

Shadow Clone | Yes | Yes

Knife Throw | Standard sequence | Can chain repeatedly

Main priority | Manage shadows | Manage shadows and extended knife pressure

Recommended Brutal approach

Keep medium distance and use ranged spells between his attacks.

When Bane begins throwing knives, continue moving until you're certain the sequence has ended.

Do not rush towards him after the first volley.

Preserve Veil for his teleport attack or an awkward combination of projectiles and nearby undead.

Managing the shadow phase

The biggest mistake is allowing Into the Shadows to create an unnecessary army.

Avoid uncontrolled area attacks while the disguised figures are active.

If additional undead appear, create distance and remove them before attempting to resume normal damage.

Rewards and unlocks

Rewards and progression

Bane's updated rewards

Unlock | Purpose

Human Form | Disguise yourself as a human

Veil of Bones | Unholy movement ability

Daggers | New weapon type introduced in 1.1

Human Form

Human Form allows you to disguise yourself and enter human settlements without immediately attracting ordinary guards.

It is especially useful for interacting with merchants.

However, certain powerful enemies can recognise you despite the disguise. Human Form also consumes blood while active, so it should be used deliberately rather than left running indefinitely.

Veil of Bones

Veil of Bones provides an Unholy-themed movement ability.

It offers another option for players developing an Unholy build and can replace your existing Veil according to your preferred combat style.

Daggers

Daggers were introduced in update 1.1.

Their combat style revolves around throwing blades, leaving them embedded in enemies or the environment, and recalling them to deal additional damage.

The weapon abilities include Throw Dagger, Rain of Daggers and Release Daggers.

This makes Bane a meaningful weapon-progression boss, particularly for players who enjoy mobile ranged combat.

What happened to Slashers?

Slashers were moved to Jakira the Shadow Huntress.

This is explicitly confirmed in Stunlock's patch notes, so our boss index and weapon-unlock guide must reflect the change.
