A PRACTICAL PROGRESSION LOOP

01

STABILISE

Learn energy management, keep food available and make reliable returns before chasing expansion.

02

IMPROVE

Turn expedition resources into better tools, equipment, crafting capacity and train systems.

03

EXPAND

Add wagons and logistics when the existing train can support the extra space and production.

04

PUSH FARTHER

Use better preparation and scouting to reach more valuable facilities and rescue more passengers.

CORE PRINCIPLE

PROGRESSION IS A LOOP

Scout, stop with a purpose, bring resources home, improve the train, then travel farther. Because Inara is procedurally generated, progress is better measured by capability than by memorising one fixed route.

DETAILED GUIDE

HOW PROGRESSION ACTUALLY WORKS

EverRail does not give you one fixed route to memorise. Inara is procedurally generated, so progression is about increasing what your crew and train can reliably handle: longer stops, stronger facilities, better equipment, more production and a larger passenger safety net.

1. SECURE THE CORE LOOP

Start with repeatable short runs. Check battery before stopping, scout a nearby location, choose one resource or objective, and leave with enough power to resume movement. Once this is reliable, establish a food reserve and a place to unload materials; do not judge early progress only by distance travelled.

2. BUILD CAPABILITY

Choose upgrades by the bottleneck they remove. If you repeatedly retreat from enemies, improve weapons, armour or supporting tools. If materials pile up unused, improve production and recipe access. If scouting is slow or risky, improve glider readiness. Patch 0.3.3 changed damage, rate of fire, range and magazine size for 32 weapon levels, reduced headshot damage to 1.5× and corrected pistol-versus-rifle damage; review old tier recommendations before investing.

3. EXPAND THE TRAIN

Expand only when you can identify the purpose of the new wagon. Keep food and survival facilities convenient, store frequently used ingredients next to their crafting stations, and give expedition equipment a consistent location. Rename wagons and favourite important fast-travel destinations so adding space does not add unnecessary travel time. After expanding, verify the existing battery, food and production routines still work.

4. PUSH INTO HARDER CONTENT

Before entering a harder facility, compare the likely reward with what the crew can safely recover: equipment condition, ammunition, passenger reserve, train charge and escape route. Patch 0.3.0 normalised Rare, Epic and Legendary loot chances, so later content should be selected for useful materials, technology or objectives, not an assumed automatic jump in rare drops. Patch 0.3.3 also made later robots tougher.

PROGRESSION PRIORITY

Suggested upgrade order: secure power and food management; make short expeditions reliably survivable; unlock useful crafting and repairs; improve the equipment that limits your next objective; organise production and storage; then expand the train. Reassess this order whenever a new bottleneck appears. Large builds are worthwhile only when they make the next journey more efficient or safer.

EXPANSION PASS II

DIFFICULTY, LOOT & LONG-TERM PLANNING

STARTING TRAIN

New games start with at least four wagons so the train includes the glider catcher. Treat those starting wagons as the foundation for specialised areas rather than immediately replacing everything.

LOOT RARITY

Rare, Epic and Legendary drop chances were normalised in 0.3.0. Late-game containers no longer become dramatically more generous simply because more loot has unlocked, so progression should target useful capability rather than farming an assumed rarity curve.

CUSTOM PROGRESSION

Custom Difficulty changes the meaning of a safe progression route. Enemy health, damage and numbers affect ammunition needs; Iso yield changes upgrade speed; Cold Build-Up Rate affects time outside; Inventory on Death alters the risk of bringing valuable gear; and Passenger Count affects the starting population limit. Note these settings when following or comparing guide advice across different saves.

DERAILMENT

Patch 0.3.1 made derailments more punishing and reduced the grace period across difficulties. When travelling toward a facility, leave enough distance to slow down, account for rail hazards and avoid assuming speed is always the fastest way to progress. A high-speed accident can erase the benefit of the supplies you intended to collect.
