RISEN ANCIENTS GUIDES

YOUR POPULATION IS YOUR LIFE COUNTER

01

RESCUE

Survivors are trapped in abandoned facilities across Inara. Bringing them aboard strengthens your society.

02

FEED

Passengers consume food, so population growth also creates a supply responsibility.

03

RESPAWN

When you die, another passenger takes your place while survivors remain aboard the train.

04

PROTECT

Avoid unnecessary deaths. More passengers provide resilience, but they are not an excuse to treat expeditions as disposable.

CORE PRINCIPLE

EVERY PASSENGER MATTERS

The game's survival structure makes population part of progression. Custom difficulty also includes settings such as Passenger Count and Inventory on Death, so the exact pressure can vary by world settings.

QUICK REFERENCE

KEEP THIS IN MIND

✓ The train must keep moving to recharge its battery
✓ Scout before committing to a stop
✓ Bring resources home with a purpose
✓ Rescue passengers whenever the risk makes sense
✓ Improve capability before chasing sheer size

DETAILED GUIDE

PASSENGERS, FOOD & DEATH

Passengers are the continuation system for the run. If the active character dies, a survivor aboard the train becomes the next playable character, so each death reduces the number of future attempts available. Rescues can rebuild that safety margin, but additional people increase food demand. Treat population, food and expedition risk as one connected decision.

RESCUE SURVIVORS

Look for rescue opportunities while scouting facilities, then check whether the train has enough food and the crew has enough health, ammunition and power to complete the return. A new passenger adds a valuable life reserve; the rescue is not worthwhile if the return trip puts the entire train at risk. Prioritise safe returns over attempting every possible rescue in one stop.

DEATH & SUCCESSION

Death transfers control to another passenger while any remain. Before a dangerous expedition, note your remaining passenger count and the world's Inventory on Death setting. Patch 0.3.3 keeps death locations marked on the map, allowing deliberate recovery planning. A marker shows where a loss occurred, not that the route or enemies have become safer.

HUNGER

Patch 0.3.2 reduced hunger build-up to approximately one third of the prior rate across difficulty settings. That gives players more time between meals but does not remove the need for food planning. Check personal hunger before a long expedition and keep enough supplies available to return safely, especially when the world's cold and survival settings are demanding.

FOOD SUPPLY

The train can consume food items other than dedicated rations. Maintain a buffer for passengers before reserving ingredients for crafting or extended trips. When planning a rescue, check the current food stock and whether you can replenish it on the next route; a larger crew improves resilience only if it remains supplied.

AUTO FEEDER

Auto Feeder I is crafted in the Lab and must be in an active toolbelt to work. At its configured hunger threshold (75 in the previously documented build) it uses a compatible food item and spends one durability for each feeding action. Check the equipped slot, suitable food supply and remaining durability before relying on it during an expedition; it complements, rather than replaces, manual planning.

CUSTOM DIFFICULTY

Custom world settings can change Passenger Count, Inventory on Death, Cold Build-Up Rate and enemy difficulty. A starting population limit affects how much survival resilience you can build, while inventory-loss rules affect recovery costs. When comparing advice between saves, record these settings before assuming the same rescue or risk strategy will work.

SURVIVAL PRIORITY

Treat passengers as strategic reserves, not spare bodies. Rescue opportunities are valuable because every additional survivor increases the run's resilience.

EXPANSION PASS II

SURVIVAL SETTINGS & POPULATION MANAGEMENT

PASSENGER COUNT

Passenger Count in Custom Difficulty also determines the train's starting maximum passenger capacity. This changes both the initial safety margin and the scale of the population system.

AUTO FEEDER I

Crafted in the Lab, Auto Feeder I activates from an active toolbelt when hunger reaches 75. It consumes one durability per feed, and compatible food carries Auto-Feed traits.

HUNGER & COLD

Current hunger build-up is roughly three times slower than before 0.3.2. Custom settings also expose Cold Build-Up Rate, allowing survival pressure to vary substantially between worlds.

RATION DISTRIBUTION

Population management routine: after every expedition, check how many passengers remain, how much food is available, and whether your next planned stop offers reliable supplies or another rescue. Food distribution and ration consumption have changed across Early Access updates, so use current in-game numbers rather than a fixed historical consumption formula. Preserve a reserve before increasing population.

INVENTORY ON DEATH

Inventory on Death is configurable, so recovery costs are not identical across worlds. Check the setting before taking rare equipment into a high-risk facility. If you lose gear, patch 0.3.3's persistent death markers help locate the site of the loss, but do not guarantee it can be retrieved. Re-equip, assess hazards and battery, and plan a separate recovery run if necessary.

MULTIPLAYER IDENTITY

Patch 0.3.2 tied player inventory to account ID instead of join order, helping returning players recover their previously held inventory and toolbelt. For co-op, assign who monitors food, who carries expedition supplies, and who checks the train before departure. Keep crew responsibilities clear, especially when one player disconnects or rejoins.
